The town was named after Francis Wayland, a preacher and president of Brown University, who established the first free library in 1848.

The town is praised by residents for its country charm and for its location, which makes all of the Boston area's cultural and recreational opportunities available. The school system is also a source of pride to the community and is regularly ranked as one of the top ten school systems in Massachusetts.

Wayland is the home of two public golf courses, Wayland Country Club, and Sandy Burr Country Club. There is a town beach located on Lake Cochituate that offers swimming and a boat launch to its residents and guests. There are conservation areas for hiking and horseback riding. Wayland is primarily residential but recently opened the long-awaited Wayland Town Center to provide numerous shopping venues and restaurants.
